Research Interests
Complex Drug Products聽(CDP)聽have complex聽substances,聽formulations, and/or聽mechanisms,聽that are聽challenging聽to聽characterize聽chemically,聽formulate physically,聽assess biologically, and evaluate clinically. Our聽research is聽to provide insights for industry, regulators, and聽clinicians聽to improve the quality, safety, efficacy,聽approvability,聽and affordability聽of CDP聽for聽patients.聽Zheng鈥檚聽group聽integrated聽an聽array聽of interdisciplinary approaches including structural-based聽drug聽design, computer modeling, formulation聽design,聽molecular聽characterization, and聽bioanalytical聽testing聽to close the gaps聽between product quality and聽clinical聽effects聽of:
- Biologics, Biosimilars, and Peptides:聽study, design,聽formulate,聽develop, and evaluatethe quality, efficacy and safety of聽therapeutic聽proteins and peptides.
- Botanical Drug Products聽(BDP)聽are聽made from natural聽complex substances.聽We聽applyanalytical techniques,聽translational聽strategies, and cutting-edge聽tools聽to demystify聽medicinal聽plants聽that can be聽developed聽into聽pharmaceutical or wellness products.
- Endocannabinoid System聽(ECS) Research:聽Cannabis is one of the most聽used and studied聽botanicals.聽The discovery of cannabinoids and then endocannabinoids聽revealed聽more fascinating聽molecular mechanisms聽between cannabinoids and the ECS.聽Dr Zheng has been focused on聽investigating聽the mechanisms聽of ECS聽and the 鈥渆ndocannabinoidome鈥, especially聽the ECS聽across the blood brain barrier (BBB) between the central nervous system and peripheral circulations.聽These studies聽are promising to聽unlock聽ECS鈥櫬爐herapeutic potentials聽for stroke, injury,聽pain,聽degenerative diseases, and substance use disorder (SUD).
These聽research聽projects聽help to聽empower patient-centered product design, enhance drug development, enable regulatory decisions, and reduce risks, including drug abuse.
